Layering rugs is one of the easiest ways to add depth to a room — but done carelessly it looks cluttered. The trick designers rely on is a simple base-and-accent formula.

Start with a natural-fiber base

A large, flatwoven natural-fiber rug — seagrass, sisal, or fique — makes the ideal foundation. Its neutral tone and tight weave give you a calm, durable canvas that anchors the whole arrangement and lets the top layer shine.

Add a smaller accent on top

Center a smaller wool or bouclé rug over the base to introduce softness, pattern, or color. The contrast in scale and texture is what makes the look feel intentional rather than accidental. Aim for the top rug to cover roughly a third to two-thirds of the base.

Mind texture and proportion

Pair a smooth base with a plush or braided top so the two layers feel distinct. Keep an even border of the base rug visible on all sides — that frame is the detail that signals a designer's hand.

Where layering works best

Living rooms, bedrooms, and reading nooks reward layering most. In a bedroom, a base under the bed with a soft accent at the footboard adds warmth exactly where bare feet land. Terra 203 can weave a custom base sized precisely to your room so the proportions land right.
